Icarus on the shore
The myth of Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun, to me has always embodied the challenges faced in youth when travelling towards adulthood. A journey full of hopes and dreams that can sometimes result in emotional tragedy or worse through lack of life experience.
Whilst my own observations are drawn from young people in the world around me, more universally the tale of Icarus embodies a generation navigating economic precocity, climate crisis, mass displacement, digital saturation, and eroded trust in the systems that govern them.
I intend to represent Icarus having taken the journey with tragic consequences who’s body is then washed up on a rock on the shore.
Carved in alabaster I’m hoping to use portions of the natural texture of the stone in places to merge the figure with the stone. Like an ancient relic, a fossil of hopes and dreams.
